Mar Portugues, Terreiro De Paco, Lisbon. 2012.

Directed by May Joseph.

The Portuguese colonized the Kerala Coast in the 1500s. They left their names, language, culture, memories, forts, food, customs, and violent history behind. Vasco Da Gama died in Cochin. In a post-colonial re-visiting of encounters, material remains, memories and history, Mar Portugues is a performative reengagement with Fernando Pessoa's notion of the Portuguese Sea, in a post-imperial moment. The ghosts of Malabar's Portuguese ruins, the residues of Portugal's colonial past
